Crown Stamp Marks

To ensure we all receive the correct measure and are not short changed for a full pint, Government Stamps have been applied to drinking vessels for hundreds of years. This used to include the Crown Stamp Mark but has now been superseded by the CE Mark. Below is a guide to Verification Crown Stamp Styles used in the United Kingdom

VR

Stamped VR + Crown + Number
Used between 1879 and 1901 during the reign of Queen Victoria.

ER

Stamped ER + Crown + Number
Used between 1901 and 1910 during the reign of King Edward 7th.



GR Crown GR Crown

Stamped GR + Crown + Number
Used between 1910 and 1952 during the reign of King George 5th & 6th. The Art-Deco style in the first photo was only used during the early years of George 5th from 1910 to around 1930 The second photo a more stylised crown was used by George 5th from about 1930 to 1936 and then by George 6th until 1952.

EIIR

Stamped EIIR + Crown + Number
Used between 1953 and 1964 during the first decade of Queen Elizabeth's 2nd reign.






Year Crown

Stamped Crown + Year + Number
Used between 1964 and 1969. The first time in almost one hundred years that no Monarch appears on the stamp.

Crown

Stamped Crown + Number
Used between 1969 and 2006, the last time a Crown Verification Stamp appeared on a UK glass.

CE Mark

In 2004 EU Measuring Instrument Directive required member countries to adopt a standardised European system of stamping beer glasses. This was implemented in October 2006.
PINT = Indicates the capacity verification (measure)
CE = Conformity to the technical harmonisation directives
M = Conformity to the legal metrology directives 2005/22/EC
10 = Year of affixing the CE Mark.
ARC = Manufactured by (Arc International) or the company that applied the mark
0126 = Identification number of the responsibe body (0126 NWML)

UKCA Mark

The UKCA marking came into effect on the 1st January 2021, due to the UK leaving the EU.
The technical requirements are largely the same as they were for the CE marking.
PINT = Indicates the capacity verification (measure)
(Tear Drop Logo) = Manufactured by (Pasabahce) or the company that applied the mark
UKCA = United Kingdom Conformity Assessment
M = Conformity to the legal metrology directives
21 = Year of affixing the UKCA Mark.
0126 = Identification number of the responsibe body (0126 NWML)

301C Crown Stamp:- 1913 to 1964 (Not seen after 1964 at this time)
Allocated to the local weights and measures authority in West Yorkshire / West Riding from 1913 to 1964. A "C" was added to the crown stamp mark to show it was a glass produced by United Glass of Castleford. United Glass closed in 1983 and was demolished in 1985.

If the glass also has the Ravenhead logo, the Ravenhead Glass Company in St Helens used this crown stamp number from 1996 to 1999 before the company took the option of self-verification and changed to their own allocated number (see 2037 Crown)

Allocated to the local weights and measures authority of Bury Metropolitan Borough Council from 1891 to 2006, when the royal cypher was replaced by a CE mark.
If the glass has the Ravenhead logo as well, The Ravenhead Glass Company in St Helens used this stamp number from 1996 to 1999 before the company took the option of self-verification and changed to their own allocated number (see 2037 Crown) With the introduction of the CE mark, Bury Metropolitan Borough Council was issued the inspection number 0846.

1545 Crown Stamp:- 1974 to October 2006
Allocated to the local weights and measures authority in Warwickshire County from 1974 to 2006, when the royal cypher was replaced by a CE mark.

2037Crown

2037 Crown Stamp:- Used from 1999 to 17th April 2001
Allocated to Ravenhead Glass in St Helens.
Marked on vessels produced by Ravenhead Glass under the self-verification act from 1999 to 17th April 2001 when the company went into administration.

2043Crown

2043 Crown Stamp:- Used from 1999 to October 2006
Allocated to Verrerie Cristallerie d'Arques (VCA) / Arc International.
Marked on vessels produced by Verrerie Cristallerie d'Arques (VCA) under the self-verification act from 1999 to 2000. In 2000 this French manufacturer changed its name and became Arc International (Arcoroc France). 2043 was used up to 29th October 2006 when the CE mark was introduced.

2138Crown

2138 Crown Stamp:- Used from 1999 to October 2006
Allocated to Pasabahce
Marked on vessels produced by Pasabahce in Turkey under the self-verification act from 1999 to 29th October 2006 when the CE mark was introduced.
