Additional Information
Francis Cobb known locally as King Cobb built a brewery in Margate Kent in 1760. A second brewery known as the Margate Brewery was built at 27 King Street by Francis Cobb Junior (the son of the founder) in 1808. The Cobb family fortunes were also in banking, shipping and insurance. The brewery stayed in the Cobb family until 1937. In January 1968 the brewery and 40 tied houses were taken over by Whitbread. Over the years the brand identity is updated and re-launched with subtle changes, a change of Logo or a new font.
Sometimes this brand update is done by the new owners after a brewery has been sold, other times just to give the brand a fresh new look on the ever growing market.
Below are some notes to help identify some of these changes and an aid to reference the year of the glass.
